Material Evidence: Chicago Architecture at 2000
December 11,1999---March 5, 2000
As a companion to One Hundred Years of Architecture. the MCA
will present Material Evidence: Chicago Architecture at 2000 in
the Turner Gallery. Guest-curated by Cynthia Davidson, director
and editor of ANYONE Corporation in New York, and former editor
of the Chicago-based journal Inland Architect, Material Evidence
will investigate the use of materials as a defining element in
contemporary architecture focusing on current work in Chicago.
Material Evidence will include commissioned installations by
Urban Lab (Sarah Dunn, Martin Felsen, designers); Studio
Gang/O'Donnell; Garofalo ArchitectsLDouglas Garofalo, Randall
Kober, designers); and Helmut Jahn/Werner Sobek. Also included
will be documentation of current work by Chicago
architects--including Krueck & Sexton Architects; ONA Design
Studio (Obi Nwazota, designer); Florian Architects; Ross Barney
+ Jankowski, Inc. (Carol Ross Barney, designer); and Valerio
Dewalt Train--in the form of three-dimensional models and other
media that illustrate different phases of projects and distinct
attitudes about the materials of architecture.
Lucky DeBellevue: The Underneath
Through December 2000
New York artist Lucky DeBellevue will create a hanging
sculpture installation in the Museum's cafe. Plastic chains
extended from the ceiling with multi-colored chenille stems
woven around them will create a series of peaks becoming
diffused into one plane at the sculpture's base. Entitled The
Underneath, this installation will reveal the artist's
interest in biological metaphors, sensual texture, a rich color
palette, and the process of handcraft. Characterized by an
eccentric admixture of delicacy and awkwardness, The
Underneath will be DeBellevue's largest and most monumental
work realized to date.
