Chicago is famous for being one of the big
homes of jazz and blues music-- so much so that we've included a
special guide to clubs and bars in the area that cater to this
smoky genre of music. If you've never been to a jazz bar,
you're in for a special treat, as the music and atmosphere will
transport you to a sadder, albeit more thought-provoking,
place. Give it a shot; you won't be disappointed.
Here are five good places to start off with.
Andy's Jazz Club
11 East Hubbard Street
(312)642-6805
Any jazz fan worth his salt knows of Andy's, a
top-of-the-line establishment that attracts casual listeners and
celebrities alike. Even the food here is noteworthy, and
the music is, of course, stellar. This place is probably
one of the best starting points for getting into the culture and
ambience of the jazz scene, so definitely make plans to spend an
evening relaxing at Andy's.
Blue Chicago
736 North Clark Street
(312)642-6261
AND
536 North Clark Street
(312)661-0100
With two different locations, both on North
Clark Street, Blue Chicago is a powerhouse in the city's jazz
scene. The first listed location is right near all
the nice restaurants, so it's very convenient to combine dinner
and jazz for an extra-relaxing evening. The second
location is older-looking--circa 1940s--and also features top
jazz and blues talent nightly. One price admits you to
both clubs, meaning that if you're not enthused by what's going
on or just want a change of scenery, you can hop right over to
the other. These two clubs are very highly recommended for
jazz fans of any level of experience.
Rosa's Lounge
3420 West Armitage Avenue
(773)342-0452
Rosa's Lounge is a charming building with an
equally charming origin. It was founded by an Italian
immigrant (and Rosa, his mom,) in an effort to get in touch with
his inner blues spirit. This dedication to perfection has
yielded one of the top joints in all of Chicago and attracts
even the most battle-hardened fans. For a taste of
authentic, down-home blues and an atmosphere that has to be
experienced to be believed, do yourself a favor and make Rosa's
Lounge a must-visit attraction during your stay in the Windy
City.
B.L.U.E.S.
2519 North Halsted Street
(773)528-1012
Much lauded by critics and top newspapers,
B.L.U.E.S. features live music every single night starting at
nine o'clock, and is so big that tickets must be handled through
Ticketmaster (312)559-1212. On-site parking and the very
high level of talent make this a worthy excursion for even the
bluest of blues fans, and first-timers will no doubt walk away
with an equally high level of appreciation. Don't miss
out.
Jazz Showcase
59 West Grand Avenue
(312)670-2473
This club is the second-oldest jazz
establishment in the United States, so you know that your
experience will be the Real Thing. The interior decor is
filed with photos of past performances, and is quite intimate in
style. Be prepared to enjoy some of the best talent in the
country, as the Jazz Showcase attracts an A-list of
performers. Definitely recommended for beginners and
seasoned veterans alike.
