Everybody needs a good laugh now and again,
and when traveling in Chicago, don't overlook the thriving
improv scene. Several key establishments have helped
bolster the careers of enterprising young funnymen and women,
and if comedy's your thing, we encourage you to check out
the following clubs; they're definitely chuckle-worthy.
Zanies
1548 North Wells Street
(312)337-4027
Zanies is regarded as Chicago's hottest
stand-up joint, and this is noteworthy considering the fact that
the city's kind of lukewarm when it comes to greeting new
talent. In the past, such big-name stars as Tim Allen, Jay
Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and others have graced the stage and
allowed the crowd to contribute to their respective rises to
superstardom. This is a great place to enjoy stand-up
talent on both a local and national level, and we give it a very
high recommendation.
Barrel of Laughs
10345 South Central Avenue, Oak Lawn
(708)499-2969
You'll have to take a little ride to get to
Barrel of Laughs, seeing as how it's about a half hour from the
center of town, but the constantly packed house is a testament
to the high quality housed within. Local and national
talents share the spotlight, talking of various things, and
making their audiences laugh...that's comedy, after all.
If you're willing to travel a little out of your way, keep this
one in the back of your mind.
Improv Olympic
3541 North Clark Street
(773)348-0500
Since improv talent runs rampant through the
streets of Chicago, we thought we'd go ahead and mention the crème
de la crème of the scene. The Olympic has helped
fuel the comedy careers of such legends as Chris Farley, Andy
Dick, and even Mike Myers of Austin Powers fame. Audience
interaction is strongly encouraged here, so don't be afraid to
step right in and play along. If you're not familiar with
the improvisational style of comedy, this is your perfect
opportunity to be introduced; it's like Saturday Night Live, but
you're a participant! Don't miss out!
